Custom Creations
Who hasn’t wanted their own blaster, lazersword or other object from one of their favorite movies? I’ve been been especially interested with how most of the weapons in the Star Wars movies were created using real weapons and other objects with extra parts added for that classic sci-fi look.
The main difference between these projects and my Functional Sculpture is that these explorations are not (as) functional.
The Media Box
The Media Box is a concept for a retro-tech, all-in-one, CEED (Communication, Education, Entertainment Device). Push the keyboard/selector controls into the box, slide the cover on and carry it wherever you need to go. Today we have mobile phones and tablets, but back in the day it’s cool to think they could have looked like this.
Silver Blaster
Though not functional, this prop pistol works well with the imagination. My 10-year-old son found the parts for the handle and barrel and said we should build a sci-fi blaster. He’s stoked with the result … and so am I.
Black Blaster
My love of sci-fi, design, and model building came together nicely in this blaster prop and diagram image. It’s made from a combination of different objects (including a pretty awesome piece from an old treadmill). The body is an old paintball gun I haven’t used in ages. I even geeked out a little (ok a lot) in imagining what each component would actually do.
Lightsaber
The force is strong with this custom crafted lightsaber hilt built with a combination of different found objects (including parts from a pop-up sprinkler and bicycle brake pad). I had a blast researching and annotating this one too.
